Taco Bell hasn't incorporated beef substitutes as extensively as Burger King and McDonald's.

Taco Bell has been experimenting plant-based ground beef for a few years. Cravetarian Taco was presented at one California location.

Another California site tested a plant-based Naked Chalupa in June. Taco Bell wanted to replace fried chicken with chalupas.

Taco Bell is testing a new Cravetarian Taco in Birmingham, Alabama. The taco will incorporate an in-house plant-based protein and taste like an enhanced vegetarian replacement. 

Alabama residents now enjoy the new Crispy Melt Taco and Nachos BellGrande. The vegetarian option is a soy and pea blend, distinct from the prior pea and chickpea blend.

The Crispy Melt Taco debuted in Birmingham. A corn tortilla is loaded with cheddar, mozzarella, and Monterey pepper jack. Taco Bell's nacho cheese sauce is then added.

Plus lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream. If you're not feeling adventurous, choose the Crispy Melt Taco with ground beef. Meat or vegetable tacos are $2.49 apiece.

Taco Bell often offers a unique item. The fast-food restaurant just launched a cheesy flatbread that tastes like pizza.

Taco Bell expanded its Italian menu after reintroducing Mexican Pizza. Creamy Chipotle sauce, fried tortilla strips, onion, cheese, and white-meat chicken top Cheesy Chipotle Chicken Flatbread.

Taco Bell is improving its veggie and vegan choices. With its in-house meat alternatives, Taco Bell may soon offer plant-based options countrywide.
