Lieutenant Uhura Nichelle Nichols,dies at 89
Nichelle Nichols, who played Nyota Uhura on "Star Trek" in the 1960s, has died at 89. Kyle Johnson confirmed her death on Facebook.
Family friend Sky Conway confirmed Nichols' death to USA TODAY, calling her "transformational" & "wonderful."
Johnson stated on Facebook, "A great star in the firmament no longer beams for us."
My mum died of natural causes last night. Her light will endure for us & future generations to appreciate, learn from, & be inspired by.
Hers was a well-lived & inspiring life.Nichols played Uhura on the original "Star Trek" TV series from 1966 to 1969 & in six films beginning with 1979's "Star Trek: The Motion Picture."
She was recognised for breaking barriers at an era when Black women had few TV opportunities.
Shatner tweeted, "I'm so sorry to hear of Nichelle's passing."
Shatner said he "will miss her" & expressed his "love & condolences" to her family.
George Takei tweeted, "I'll have more to say about the trailblazing, matchless Nichelle Nichols."
"Today, my heart is heavy, my eyes like the stars you now rest amid, my darling buddy." Grace Dell Nichols was born Dec. 28, 1932, in Robbins, Illinois.
