CZECH SMOKE FROM FOREST FIRES

The fire department has instructed western Czechs to keep their windows closed as they fight a forest fire.

SINCE SUNDAY, PARTS OF THE GERMAN-BORDERING BOHEMIAN SWITZERLAND NATIONAL.

PARK HAVE BEEN BURNING. STRONG WINDS HAVE SPREAD SMOKE OVER THE COUNTRY AMID RECORD TEMPERATURES & DROUGHT.

100KM (60 MILES) TO THE SOUTH, THE STENCH OF SMOKE HAS REACHED PRAGUE.

PARDUBICE, 180KM SOUTH-EAST, HAS ALSO SEEN SMOKE. HUNDREDS OF CZECH FIREMEN FOUGHT THE BLAZE IN MEZNA, WHICH BURNED FORESTS & HOMES.

THE FIRE ALSO THREATENED THE GERMAN BORDER HAMLET OF HRENSKO, FORCING MANY TO LEAVE.

AS THE FIRE PROGRESSED, THREE GERMAN TEAMS EVACUATED FOR GERMANY.

BAD SCHANDAU IN SAXON SWITZERLAND NATIONAL PARK WAS WARNED OFF TO TOURISTS.

THE FIRE BRIGADE RECEIVED MANY REPORTS CONCERNING SMOKE DRIFT & ASKED CZECHS TO CALL ONLY IF THEY SPOTTED FLAMES.

BBC'S ROB CAMERON IN PRAGUE SAYS NEGLIGENCE CAUSED THE FIRE.
